From the Take Back the Continent collection, this denim jacket was a thrift find in a store in Chapel Hill. I abstractly decorated the jacket with red, black and green, colors known to represent the Pan African flag and with the writing BLACK LIVES MATTER boldly written on the back. This piece is created and signed by me during a time of uncertainty and social unrest. This piece and the entire Take Back the Continent collection was my reaction to the pandemic, the idea that Africa was going to be used as a lab and its people the guinea pigs for the covid vaccine experiments, the killing of Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery and George Floyd. The numbness I felt was overcoming, I needed to release, I needed to say something. something important. I decided to paint fashion. At least I could wear my thoughts.
